I sometimes feel like Academy Award nominated films do not necessarily appeal to the masses. Some require a lot of thinking. Some require a lot of emotional commitment.
The Help is so powerful because rarely is anything written by the point of view from these maids who practically raised children from the 60s while their own kids were farmed out to relatives back on their side of the tracks. Davis and Spencer were perfectly cast as two women with extremely different character traits working to fulfill the same goal. They were the perfect yin and yang and it was beautiful to see their strength and courage portrayed on the screen.
That said, The Help has managed to simultaneously generate Oscar buzz while appealing to demographics across the board.

The Help is a story about how one person can make a difference in society all by being an advocate for change. It is a story about a group of people who think they are better than everyone else. It is mostly about a group of people who are downtrodden and spit upon by the other group of people. It is a timeless story that will make most Americans embarrassed about our past history and it will also ring a familiar bell in regards to the injustices of today.
For this film, I have decided to not write my normal review. This movie is a serious Oscar contender for Best Picture and I truly believe that this story should not be summarized by someone with a blog. The story is too amazing to be limited to so few words. I will say that all of the cast performed with excellence. There was feeling and emotion in every character. The only fault that I find with the film is the lack of resolution. The film's villains seem to remain in that vile state rather than experience life change. However, I don't see how anyone who views this film can not have an emotional change within them. So maybe the resolution actually lies within the viewer.
